Europe football governing body, UEFA recently announced the team of the tournament for the just concluded European Championships which was recently held in Poland and Ukraine. The list was compiled by UEFA Technical committee. Read and comment on the list.
Starting between the sticks, Iker Casillas only let in a single strike throughout the entire tournament, conceding in the opener versus Italy and remaining unbeaten through out the tournament. He also came up with a decisive stop in the semifinal penalty shootout against Portugal.
At right back is Greece Vasilis Torosidis who was rampant down the right for 2004 champions Greece. In the center of defence is Realmadrid’s Pepe who was an ever-steady and daunting presence for a Portugal side that can be considered an unlucky loser at the last-four stage. Gerard Pique who was heavily criticized for an inconsistent 2011/2012 campaign with Barcelona, but stepped up to prove ever present for the injured Carles Puyol for La Roja. His teammate Jordi Alba’s dashing runs down the flanks led to many chances and he converted his first-ever international goal in the final.
In middle of the pack is, Sami Khedira showed how much he is improving as an all-round player with dynamic performances alongside a subdued Bastian Schweinsteiger. However,
Andrea Pirlo brought his fine Juventus form with him, with excellent passing, set pieces, and a ‘Panenka’ penalty as a bonus. His teammate Daniele De Rossi was almost everywhere, literally, as he started out in defense and then moved into his regular midfield role with more energy and drive than anyone else at Euro 2012.
Andres Iniesta’s incisive runs and quick touches kept Spain’s tiki-taka football flowing as the team controlled matches, including the final, in brilliant but composed fashion. David Silva was sensational with two goals during the campaign, including a superb headed opener in the Kiev final, as well as three assists.
Finally, after a mediocre start to the competition, Cristiano Ronaldo exploded into action with two match-winning performances against Netherlands and Czech Republic. So what is your take on the list.
